Description | The JNG (JPEG Network Graphics) format is a lossy bitmap image file format that is an extension of the PNG (Portable Network Graphics) format. It was designed to provide a way to store and transmit bitmap images with lossy compression while retaining the alpha channel, color accuracy, and the flexibility of the PNG format. |
Technical details | JNG files use a combination of the PNG and the JPEG compression algorithms. The header of the JNG file contains the same signature as the PNG file, and the file structure is very similar to PNG. The difference is that JNG files can contain JPEG data in addition to PNG data. JNG supports a wide range of color spaces including sRGB, grayscale, RGB with alpha, and CMYK.
One of the primary benefits of JNG files is that they can contain both lossy and lossless data in a single file. This allows users to balance image quality and file size according to their needs. JNG files can also be easily edited and manipulated without losing image quality. However, due to its complexity and the fact that it has not been widely adopted, JNG is not supported by many image editors and web browsers. |
