| Description | WMF format is a positional graphics domiciled with Windows; it aids the direct display of an image on the screen of a device, in a particular way. Though a graphical format, the WMF is not limited to use in image files. Any object – text, image, video all require a code for pixel displacement to enjoy accurate rendering, made possible by WMF in early PCs. WMF format also assists with holding copied information, and subsequent pasting in another document or environment. Though initially designed as a format that saves documents in 16-bit fragments, WMF equally supports 24-bit RGB-color palette and is used for exporting graphics from one application to the other. |
| Détails techniques | Microsoft released the first version of the WMF file type in 1988, as a part of Windows 3.0. However, with the 3.1 updates of Windows in 1992, significant upgrades were made to the format. The latest update to Windows MetaFile was released to the public in 2006. To date, the WMF file format still enjoys relevance in Microsoft Office packages like Word and PowerPoint. Since JPG and GIF have stolen the show among image file formats, WMF's popularity has waned, though it is still compatible with several computer programs. Graphical Device Interface is a series of commands that make a real-time drawing made possible by the WMF, which holds some code before displaying the image on the screen. |
